If all signers were Christians of one stripe or another–how is this explained? Expediency, lies, big change it attitude between Declaration of Independence and a Federalist government? What is the Conservative view--I am confused. See below:In 1797 our government concluded a "Treaty of Peace and Friendship between the United States of America and the Bey and Subjects of Tripoli, or Barbary," now known simply as the Treaty of Tripoli. Article 11 of the treaty contains these words: "As the Government of the United States... is not in any sense founded on the Christian religion -- as it has in itself no character of enmity against the laws, religion, or tranquillity of Musselmen -- and as the said States never have entered into any war or act of hostility against any Mehomitan nation, it is declared by the parties that no pretext arising from religious opinions shall ever produce an interruption of the harmony existing between the two countries."This document was endorsed by Secretary of State Timothy Pickering and President John Adams. It was then sent to the Senate for ratification; the vote was unanimous. It is worth pointing out that although this was the 339th time a recorded vote had been required by the Senate, it was only the third unanimous vote in the Senate's history. There is no record of debate or dissent. The text of the treaty was printed in full in the Philadelphia Gazette and in two New York papers, but there were no screams of outrage, as one might expect today.

Yes–MAST –not Mass– In the morning I am incredibly stupid. As the day wears on I get marginally better andby dusk my ears are erect and I can read!WillyD
I am familiar with this astonishing book and grateful that it survived.Acorns were very important as the provided food for hogs which roamed the forests of Europe feastingon the fallen treats. he word "mash" is somehow related, but it is too early to think about looking it up.Pigs were a vital part of the peasant life as they bred rapidly, essentially took care of themselves andwere, I am told, quite tasty "sweet is the meat of the pig" is a line I recall from somewhere, but as I said it is too early and I am up by accident. Thanks for the pictures--lovely.
Totalitarian governments suffer rivals with difficulty and even a benign leader such as Bismarck (compared to Hitler) had a KULTURKAMPF with religious authority. Interesting lyrics though–some of which I have never seen–thank you.Ah the happy days in Germany described by Tacitus--virtuous women, brave men, ample food and worthy foes, lots of trees, war gods--a pagan paradise. Forgot--iron/steel weapons!
I would say the right is better at being open to dissent than the left. When there was dissent under Bush, the only comment I heard him make about it was that that was part of our country and that they were free to have their opinions. With dissent under Obama, the president goes after the dissenters. Also, reinstation of the Fairness Doctrine keeps resurfacing with the Democrats because they don't like the message that a few conservative commentators are able to communicate. When there was dissent under W., Nancy Pelosi said she respected the dissenters. When there was dissent under Obama, she called it "un-American".Not long ago I saw a car with some Obama or other Democrat bumper stickers on it, along with another sticker which said that dissent was the highest form of patriotism. I wonder if that person feels the same way now that the shoe is on the other foot.I have read your post--I dissent
