Has anyone seen this movie? The actor who plays Hitler is brilliant. here is the link to IMDB:http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0363163/Its in German and subtitled in english. It covers Hitlers last few days in his bunker as Berlin is falling.
Looks like it is German with English subtitles, right? But it does look interesting. I saw this in the trivia section:
Karl Richter, a member of the German NPD (a national party which was almost banned by the Federal Constitutional Court and is a political refuge for skinheads and neo-nazis), managed to get into the movie via the normal way of being cast. ... He later expressed his pleasure and satisfaction when the casting crew asked him to try on the uniform, lift his right arm and shout "Heil Hitler." The filmmakers did not know who he was and that he actually was quite experienced in performing the asked task.
Maybe they didn't know or maybe they did…who knows how many Neo-Nazis have already infiltrated the German film industry (the best platform for resurrecting their propaganda).
I saw this movie in the theaters in Germany when it came out in 2004 during my last tour in Europe. I have also read the book ?Inside Hitler's Bunker: The Last Days of the Third Reich? by Joachim Fest this is the text on which the movie is based. Fest is one of the preeminent historians of Nazi Germany though since the majority of his work is in German is little known in the English-speaking world. It is an outstanding book and movie. It is definitely not a sympathetic look at Hitler; it is simply a recounting of the final days of Hitler?s life. This is the link to the book and movie on Amazon:http://www.amazon.com/Inside-Hitlers-Bunker-Third-Reich/dp/0312423926/ref=pd_bbs_sr_2?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1211297937&sr=1-2http://www.amazon.com/Downfall-Bruno-Ganz/dp/B0009RCPUCIt was very controversial in Germany when it came out as it portrays Hitler as both a human and a madman. The movie is available here in Texas at some of the rental places. I would highly encourage everybody to both see the movie and read the book, which has also been translated into English.
Most madmen are very charismatic. If they were “mad” all the time how would they gain followers? This movie did portray him at times nice and somwhat charming, but at others you could see he was going off the deep end.
I think the stress, drugs, and sleep deprivation made Hitler's already unstable personality worse. As it became more and more clear that the war was lost, Hitler regressed into a fantasy world oblivious to what was really going on around him. It was his coping mechanism.
