In 1836 a war party of Creek Indians led by a Creek/Scot halfbreed named Jim McHenry made a series of attacks from Alabama into Western Ga. They suprised a sleeping group of militia at a steamboat landing called Roanoke. All the residents and militia except a few were killed. From there they laid seige to Shepard's Plantation. The Stewart County militia came to the aid of the people at Shepard's and a battle ensued. My GG-Grandfather was Capt. Green B. Ball of the Stewart Militia. The only white casualty of the Shepard's battle was Capt Ball's close friend Jared Irwin. The millitia then chased the Indians to Ichawaynochaway Swamp in present day Terrell County Ga,The following link is the report of the three day fight that followed:http://genealogytrails.com/geo/stewart/SteIndWars.htmJim McHenry later decided he had rather be white than Indian so he became a Methodist minister
