This is a cool photo from Mulberry Street in NY. If you've seen Gangs of New York, you've heard of this street. It's somewhere near Little Italy. See on the left side how people near and far and looking directly at the cameraman.
Yes, that was part of the notorius five points district. It doesnt exist anymore but the area is little italy and China town.
When was this picture taken? It doesnt look like turn of the centrury photography.
It looks strange because the artist that colored it fif not color the whole picture. Notice that the children in the lower left are still in black and white.

It is odd. I'm guessing that they color the image based on the level of gray shading from the black and white photo, starting with objects of which they already know the color. So they might shade the vegetables on the stand a greenish color, and then everything else in the photo with that same shade of gray gets colored green. In the end it looks a bit off....colors are too vibrant from what you'd expect.
Coloring it really brings out a lot of detail though. Whoever did it did a good job.
