It falls between the dates listed for WWI and WW2. Both sides had tried revolution earlier in the decade and each had promised another run at it if they lost the '36 election. Interesting as the story was written by the losers, contravening the old saw. Pretending a fight for democracy and the recovered memory of the so-called Lincoln Brigade clutching Roosevelt's famous premature fascist as its selfpitying mantra. Franco as brutal as the left could have been. Isolated and the 1st test of the new UN's mettle, proof of its impotence as its multiple resolutions, each promising force if human rights were not respected, were ignored.What would have been the result if the left had won? Would a communist Spain have been the sustaining result and, if so, what would have been its signficance in the Cold war that was to come?
Spain was a non player in the Cold War. Spain has no significant military or economic power to be taken seriously. England, France, and Germany are the real powers of Europe. Spain would have remained in their orbit no matter how the Civil War turned out.
Disagree Don – not that Spain would have been significant on its own but that it could not have been. Russia could well have armed Spain just as it would have Cuba, East Germany and the Soviet block – just as the US did with missle placemetns during the Cold War.

NATO would never have allowed it. Britain controls the Straits of Gibraltar and NATO would have blockaded Spain if necessary. I'm sure that MI-6 and the CIA would have toppled any regime in Spain that threatened them. Russia conceded Spain to the West. This is just a non issue.

Highly unlikely. Even though Spain was fairly neutral (if you want to call being on "friendly terms" with Mussolini and Hitler neutral), Spain would only help the Axis powers when it went against Russia.If I'm wrong, correct me.
Spain would have remained neutral no matter what. They didn't have the stomach for another war so shortly after their Civil War.
Spain (Franco) would have gladly joined the Germans, but they were in no shape to do so after their civil war. Even so, Spain did send a division of volunteers that fought on the eastern front. They were called the B;ue division and apparently were one of the higher quality allied divisions that fought with the Germans.
Disagree Don. Please recall I offered the scenario by which the so-called Republic had triumphed in the civil war. As an ally against Nazi Germany it would certainly have been favored during the war even if it did not engage actively. Agree that Gilbraltor would have been a pivotal element but do not agree that substance would have remained for an internal revolt (any moree than Franco allowed remnants of his opponents to remain viable). Given ten years to consolidate power and having been armed to some extent by the allies - the issue would not been resolved so simply.

I never said internal revolt, I said a coup d'etat or false flag event orchestrated by MI-6 or the CIA. Trust me when I say this, Spain is in the West's orbit, and nothing on the ground in Spain could change that fact....nothing. Furthermore, I don't think the Soviets could have trusted Spain to be a very dependable ally. I just can't see it is all I'm saying.
