Any thoughts on the matter?
Hi Jessca,I haven't studied this topic per se but I wonder if it had connections to the abolitionist movement of the mid-19th century and the later prohibition movement of the early 20th century. I had heard somewhere that the prohibitionists essentially "took up" the cause of the abolitionists that came before them, but needed to find a new cause to advocate. I wonder if one of the offshoots of this was also the women's suffrage movement. ???
Hi there,The women's rights and abolition movements seemed to be joined at the hip and then separated later on. Once the black men received the right to vote, or rather, the Constitution prevented hindering their vote, then all the sudden there wasn't as much support from free black men for women's rights. Anyone agree?Think about how women's rights and civil rights for blacks have gone hand-in-hand over the years. Throughout American history, the two have been somewhat joined. It just seems that later on the civil rights movement didn't like women tying in to their cause because it took away from theirs.
