Just read something in Wikipedia about Frederick I, who died on this day (June 10) in the Year of Our Lord 1190. The article states:
...on June 10, 1190, Frederick died while crossing the Saleph River in Cilicia, south-eastern Anatolia. The exact circumstances are unknown. It is likely that he was thrown from his horse and the shock of the cold water caused him to have a heart attack at the age of 68. Weighed down by his armour, he drowned in water that was barely hip-deep, according to the chronicler Ibn al-Athir.
There was also a reference in the article about the "Spear of Destiny", supposedly the spear which pierced Christ's side at the crucifixion. I had never heard of this spear having a story in the years after the crucifixion - whether of legend or truth. Evidently, there is quite a history that is alleged to be intertwined with the Spear - from its discovery during the Crusades to Himmler's quest for the Spear during WWII to its travel to Antarctica during the 1970s. Who knows how much of this story is real?
I watched a show about the spear a couple months ago and a lab was allowed to test it for age, dna and all matter of other things, and I think it was dated around 800-900 AD.
