Here is a nice map I found while randomly surfing today. It is also quite instructive. It is a comparison between voting patterns in last years presidential election and cotton production in the American ca. 1860. A very interesting correlation exists between cotton production and the voting pattern. It is on general though as all cotton producing areas did not vote Democrat.
