My thesis is: “The Serbs are troublemakers”. I thought of this last night while working on something else. It just hit me that except for the time when Tito was in power, the Serbs have pretty much caused a lot of trouble in the past hundred years. They were instrumental in the Balkan Crises prior to WWI and in the outbreak of that war. They were pretty quiet in the interwar years because of the whupping Germany and Austria put on them during the war. Post WWII, Tito pretty much kept a lid on them but as soon as he died they were right back at it. Witness the Balkan wars of the 1990's. Come to think about it it is Ironic that the 20th century strated and ended in Europe with Balkan wars initiated by the Serbs. I know when I was there in '96 the Serbs I talked to were unapologetic about their belligerence.
I see you point but the next question would be WHY do they look like troublemakers? If we have a closer look into Serbia history, many facts can be explained (not justified).
They are like any other group that thinks they have been denied what is rightfully theirs. The dream of Greater Serbia is not dead, it has just been put into abeyance while they regroup and lull their neighbors. I would bet we will see more Balkan wars over the next 40-50 years until the Serbs are either put down completely or realize their ambitions.
