R.I.P.'Catcher in the Rye' author J.D. Salinger diesDid any of you have to read "Catcher in the Rye" in high school? I did, though I can't remember the precise storyline. I did find it rather peculiar that J.D. Salinger became a recluse over the past few decades.
I read it in middle school in an effort to understand John Hinckley. I thought it was fairly strange. But then, I think most books that become classics are a little on the strange side. That is the difference between literature and a book I think.
The difference between a book and lit is really this… you remember the lit you read in middle school and forget the books. 8)Good art like well done commercials stays in you head; either way the product is remembered.
So then I guess most of the best sci-fi I have read is lit then too because I remember and reread it? I cannot imagine an English teacher requiring students to read Heinlein's Stranger in a Strange Land. It is probably way too subversive talking about responsibility and stuff like it does.I read many classics in school of which I can only remember the title and not the substance.

Like beauty, lit is in the eye of the beholder. Classic is a subjective term and even if everyone else thinks it classic... you have a vote too! I read a lot of classics that I wouldn't walk across the street to drop off at the used bookstore. 😉 BTW, I hope the safe is full of manuscripts.
