Take a look at the scene from the Via del Corso in Rome during carnival, 1836. I magnified the thing in question. A turnip in the crowd?
What do you mean by turnip ?
I mean – what in the world is it? Looks like a turnip-man to me.
After intensive research and scrutinizing…, wouldn't it be the back of a carnival “char” (chariot) ?
With a smiling face on it? With its right hand up to its mouth? Here's where I got the original image from…you might be able to zoom in some more.http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/7/73/Carnaval_de_Rome%2C_via_del_Corso%2C_1836.JPG
I've checked it again, you can find the full original book here : http://gallica.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/bpt6k31419b.image.f58.langEN , a digitised copy of “Le Magasin pittoresque” ed. 1836, p. 54-58 (see picture below)However, nowhere this head is considered as special or turnip-like, except, perhaps, as a kind of brain teaser for erudite of the future 😉What about the second document from Hans Glaser ?
Looks like a turnip-guy to me. Maybe the artist enjoyed a littttle too much heroin(I mean opium) before drawing the picture.
Fall off the turnip truck …Do you know the turnip man,the turnip man,the turnip man?Do you know the turnip manwho likes to sing with me?Oh, he loves the letter T,the letter T,the letter T,Oh, he loves the letter Tand likes to sing with me.I'm sober tho ;D
