Quite an emotional day today – I spent pretty much all day at the Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, Virginia. A great historical site, and I've been there many times before, but today was matriculation day for 501 new “rats” of what will become the class of 2014. From 2004 to 2006 I served as the Scoutmaster of our local Boy Scout Troop, and today two of “my” Eagle Scouts became rats. They told us that less than 11% of the rat class had earned either Eagle Scout or Gold Award – I guess that'd be about 53 or 54 rats – and two of them I had watched grow up – from goofy little Webelo Scouts up through Eagle. True to form, both of these young men had signed up for the Marine option ROTC (although neither are scholarship recipients and are not necessarily committed to serve upon graduation). And if the Scoutmaster pride wasn't enough, one of those young men was my son. Hard to believe that he's grown that much. Hard to believe that he's chosen to take a route to college that most of his peers wouldn't even consider.I couldn't be more proud and I just needed to brag a little. Thanks for indulging me.Excuse me, I think I got something in my eye....
skiguyModeratorCongrats to him (and you) and I wish him the best. Obviously dad did a good job raising him and setting a good example for him.
PhidippidesKeymasterWow congratulations on a job well done in raising him and the other Eagle Scouts. I'm sure he'll do just fine while there. 🙂Now there's something I didn't realize, but is it true (either historically or even now) that the scouts are/were envisioned as a kind of military feeder organization? Or something of that sort? I'm just saying because it seems like that is a lot of Eagle Scouts going into a military college (compared to non-military universities). I never thought of it until just now.
DonaldBakerParticipantOh didn't you guys know? The Boy Souts are a paramilitary organization that breeds future domestic terrorists. Notice they wear brown shirts? Come on, can't you see the connection to Hitler's Brown Shirts? Ooooh and they also pledge allegiance to God — we can't have that now can we? The Boy Scouts of America is nothing but a right-wing Christian Fundamentalist paramilitary organization teaching kids how to be the next Tim McVeigh. It blows my mind that there are people (and government agencies *cough*) that believe this to some degree.
scout1067ParticipantCongrats Vulture. It sounds like you have raised a fine young man.
