I hadn't known about this issue before, but today I read that someone tampered with a pardon issued by Lincoln. The date was changed from 1864 to 1865. It's hard to know why, since there were likely photographs of the original pardon taken which could be used to verify the document.Va. historian denies tampering with Lincoln pardon
The article makes it sound like the guy supposedly did it to have a claim to fame. A plausible idea at the least although it would only be really known in historical circles except for the fact hat he got caught and is now really getting his 15 minutes.
