I have been out for the past week because I had back surgery and was in the hospital. I will say that so far, the cure seems worse than the disease although the doctors assure me that I should pain free once the trauma from the surgery itself heals. We will see. I have been living with a back back for 17 years so even the small bit of relief I have now is better than it was before.
How did you hurt it? I hurt my back about 9 years ago while on the bench press when I arched my back too much. After that, my lower back would hurt if started doing strenuous exercising without easing into it enough. Actually, now that I think of it, I haven't felt the pain in a few years, but I think it could still be around the corner. Anyway, back pain is some of the worse because of the way it really immobilizes you and affects so many other parts of the body.
I initially injured it in 1992 when a case of 25mm ammunition landed on my back during a Bradley rollover at NTC in California. All the doctors I have talked to have told to me to defer surgery as long as possible. The pain got bad enough in the last few months that I finally decided to get it over with. There is also the fact that if I get it done while on Active Duty there is not as big a hassle about getting it. The VA would pay for it but it would be much more paperwork. So far the old pain is gone but I have pretty significant pain just from the recovery process. They did a discectomy, where they cut away a portion of the disc while leaving the rest in. I had it done at the University Hospital in Regensburg by one of the top neurosurgeons in Germany so at least the army paid for quality.
