    A number of these date to the latter half of the 19th century, but some did not become extinct until well into the 20th century.Rare Photographs of Extinct Animals

    Wasn't there some extinct woodpecker or something in Arkansas that researchers claimed to have rediscovered in the wild a few years ago?

    I think that would be the ivory-billed woodpecker.  It looks very similar to the pileated woodpecker.  I took a course in avian ecology in college and I remember that we used to joke about finding one of these birds.
