I was in a town named Weiden in der Oberpfalz because my truck was in the shop getting its 60,000 mile services done. SInce I had time I decided to walk from the shop downtown to get something to eat and basically hang out until my truck was done. While walking I saw a climate monitoring station (pictures below). I immediately starting cracking up and then I started getting mad. The station is right in the middle of town at this grid (49.678962,12.15923), search fro the grid in Google maps and you will see where it is at. What got me mad is that not only is the station in the middle of town so that it's reading s are affected by all the pavement, there is also and AC unit on the roof less than 6 feet from the weather instruments. We have heard before about how the placement of these stations affects climate readings. Stuff like this is one reason I distrust the claims of global warming.Oh yeah, it says Bayerisches Landesamt für Umwelt on the sign, that translates to Bavarian State Bureau for the Environment.Ski, I figured you in particular would get a kick out of the pictures. I got some pretty funny looks from people while I was taking the pictures.[attachimg=1][attachimg=2]
I have just assumed that environmentalists take into account the fact that temperature readings are adjusted due to the “heat island” effect caused by so much concrete absorbing solar heat in cities, but I have not heard how they do this. I don't know if this particular station monitored temperatures, but I imagine this is probably one of the things it does. It is quite large – and what a joy to look at! 😀
I would be very surprised that scientists use that kind of monitoring station for their warning about global warming. But well, in times of “intelligent design”, science is fundamentally challenged for religious and political reasons, nothing new since Galileo (except a dark age revival ?) 8)
I have heard about it before and here are some places that talk about it and even one with pictures. This site details most sites of record in the US.

I would be surprised to find out that they did not or do you think there are two different sets of climate monitoring stations? I know government takes a lot of our money but that seems a little over the top, even for government. This piece from NASA poo-poos the argument that siting of the stations has anything to do with how good the measurements are, even claiming that 50% of the data could be thrown out without affecting the overall validity of the data set, I find that contention questionable at best.
