Had a Megalithic period phone and wanted something more. Went with Virgin Mobile because I wanted the text/data/web stuff but didn't want to pay too much or get a new contract. It's $35/month unlimited data and 300 min phone. That's plenty for me, but if I go over the next plan is $45 with 1200 minutes. Now all I need to do is learn how to use this thing. I did send my first ever text to a buddy and it worked!! Once the phone's charged, I'm going to try the app thing. There's a cool zombie app out there I need.

I am going to remember that line because I like to chronicle historical events. 🙂 Actually, I didn't realize Virgin Mobile was so inexpensive. I do not have a smartphone because I have found it hard justifying paying an extra $15-$30/month on what basically is mobile internet service. Instead, I have a basic cell phone with a Sprint plan that I have had for years, which gives me a lot of talk time and the plan is only $35/month. I just took a look at the Virgin Mobile site. One thing - it looks like they don't have night/weekend minutes, so your 300 minutes are all you get for the month?
yes, but i don't use my cell a lot. I had a basic plan and asked about full data service. It was almost $100!! Not worh it. Virgin Mobile isn't the greatest, but it works so far.
I just got my first Android phone a few days ago since I wanted to be able to use the internet while on the go once in a while. I can finally scan QD codes which seem to be popping up all over the place these days. There are a lot of cool features that I am now learning about. The Google Goggles app lets you take a picture of many different things, and it will analyze the image and provide information about it. I tried it out and it works nicely. I took photos of photos on my monitor of certain historical works of painting and sculpture, and it was able to identify them (or at least the artist). Pretty darn cool.
Good to know. That'll be good for the pop quizzes here. 😀 I don't use the net too much on mine, but what I like is when I'm at a coffee shop with a book and need to quickly look up something.
One thing I don't want to become is a technofreak. I now have unlimited text messaging, whereas in the past I had to pay $.20 per message. I can now use things such as Foursquare which were only a curiosity up until now. Anyway, this past spring semester I had a few students in my class who would constantly be typing away on their phones. I don't really mind it if someone sends a text message or something on occasion, but the habitual user starts to annoy me. I could have said something, or kicked the offending students out of class, but I chose to ignore it instead. Technology is great, but it has turned us into a short attention span culture.

You need to make yourself as accessible to your students as possible so use that phone for texting and if you have the capability, file transfers for papers.

Wow, I don't even put an office phone number on my syllabus. I do, however, usually respond to student emails relatively quickly, sometimes even late at night (I'm usually up anyway). I am not sure how much I would want to give out my personal phone number to students. My officemate once received an anonymous email from a disgruntled student who dropped the f-bomb and totally insulted him in the letter. It would be even worse if an angry student were to decide to use my phone number for nefarious purposes. ???

That's part of the job. You are eventually going to get into it with a student so you might as well get prepared for it.
Now that I've been playing around with my phone for a bit I had the great idea that the kind of app I wish they made was one which allowed me to scan in ISBN numbers from books so that I could electronically keep track of my books in a database. Lo and behold, I did some searching and found that there are actually a number of such apps already in existence. Now I can go through my personal collection of books now, scan in the barcodes, and have the book information automatically updated – including a summary of the book, which is pretty nice if you ask me.I read some reviews and then tested out two such apps, Codex and Book Catalogue. I decided I prefer the latter. After you add a book (via scanning the barcode or manually adding it) you can add it to a "book shelf" (a topic name of your choosing), add notes, and keep track if you lend it out to someone. My personal bookshelf is not as large as some of yours, but I suppose that I can always scan in books that I merely check out from the library so I have a record with me for the future.
I got an Android smartphone about 6 weeks ago and love it. My only complaint is how fast it goes through the battery. My phone has to be recharged every other day or it dies on me, my old one only needed to be recharged once a week.
That's what I noticed as well. I pretty much have to plug mine in everyday. It also helps to have a car charger. You can use an app like Juice Defender which improves the life of a charge by turning off wifi/data when you're not using it. I used it for a while but found that it interfered with my music listening on Pandora. I believe there are ways around it with the paid version. May be worth checking out.https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.latedroid.juicedefender&hl=en
