I don't know if any of you have used this, but it has been a lifesaver of sorts for me. I ran out of minutes this month because I had to spend a lot of time talking to Hyundai about our car which was basically ruined a few weeks ago. Because I don't want to pay $.40/minute until my minutes are renewed, I tried to find online how you can make calls for free over the internet (didn't want to use Skype), and I found a few services but they had weird restrictions (five minute talk time, etc.). Then I stumbled across the phone feature in Gmail, which allows you to make calls right from the Gmail interface. If you also use Google Voice, it makes the whole thing even better. It is very clear, and very convenient. So if you have a Gmail account and want to make a call directly from your computer, just call from there.
I you ever heard of the apps Tango or Viber? Both have free voice and Viber has free voice and text as long as you're near an internet connection. I use it to text one of my friends because he has to pay for each one on his regular plan.
No, I haven't. I didn't see them when I looked at a list of free internet phone services, either. I do use an app associated with Sprint (Zipwhip) when I want to send or receive a text while I'm sitting at my computer, rather than paying the $.20 it costs me to do it over the phone.
