Private Wheeler of the 51st Regiment landed at Lisbon in Portugal during the Peninsula War. Looking around he was quite shocked at the exess of filth in the streets and the number of priests walking about. His typical English solution was to draft all the able-bodied clergy he could find and set them to work cleaning the streets.
