We need to figure out ways we can share content and traffic from our various websites primarily WCF, Military-History.us, and Writers of History. I will also funnel traffic to Phid and Scout's sites from my other sites Christian Legacies, Interleague Sports, and Cardinals Online. I know our group is still small, but I cannot generate enough content on my own and I know Phid and Scout feel the same way. My thinking is if we build a network together, we can increase our traffic quicker than going it alone. What do you guys think?
I am amenable to the idea. I already have links to most of the sites on my blog but I am not sure what else to do to drive traffic between our sites. I have thought about stating to write posts linking to relevant threads on both WCF and WoH but time is always the issue. I am also not sure how much cross-traffic we can really generate this way. I get between 3,000 and 5,000 unique visitors a month and it swings wildly based on the type of content I put up. I have pretty much settled down to one substantive post a week because it seems to be the most I can do and still maintain quality. The biggest limiter is just that, content generation. It is a time eater and I do have a life outside the intertubes.I am definitely willing to explore ways we can cross fertilize and drive traffic between our sites. What kind of traffic numbers do you guys generate or do you even do analytics? I am also willing to do some guest posts over at the WoH blog. The one thing I think that should be avoided is trying to do something and ending up having a shotgun blast effect that is unfocused.
My feeling is also that I am not entirely sure what to do besides the link to other sites here and there. Perhaps we could do featured cross posts? For example, Scout could make a post here at WCF that we sticky on the “top ten strategic blunders in warfare history” (or something else that would attract a lot of traffic) that would have links to his blog, and which we could then promote through Stumble Upon, Google Plus, etc. That kind of thing would entail cross-promotion, and I think would gain visitors. I am a big fan of top ten lists in history because they are entertaining and often times informative, even if they are usually just one person's opinion.I think that the key to generating initial traffic is less in discussion forums, and more in in-demand information. My Great Awakening site generates about 4-6k visitors/month, but hit over 17k during its peak month last Fall when students return to school (I get about 4-5k visitors at WCF/month). The thing is, I don't have to do any work on that site; I just pretty much leave it alone and let people in. I have been able to direct a few people from there to WCF as well. Even though it's not as "sexy" to create a static site which draws in visitors, it is far easier to do.
We have to make a concerted effort to write meaningful content on each other's sites. For example, I can post your book reviews on WoH and offer some of my own. I need some articles on conference realignment on my Cardinals Online site etc….We have to increase the meta data and keywords so that random audiences find our sites on the search engines. I also plan to start some paid advertising on Cardinals Online at some point as soon as I can find a place suitable to advertise like maybe the Louisville Courier-Journal. Anyway, this also goes for members here who want their papers published on the net. Phid you might offer some extra credit to willing students who would like their work published online. It would give them an extra incentive to work harder and benefit us as well. You're in a very good situation there. There are probably many ways we can collaborate.
I guess one problem is that there are very few no other people here who have expertise in Louisville sports, so we would be of little help, other than the “I agree with what he said” type of commentators on your site. You have a slick looking site with some nice content in the articles you've written. Ok, so I registered at your site. Wow, you are really digging yourself a niche there....no idea about the Steve Kragthorpe answer until I Wikipediaed it....perhaps that one is a bit too hard? Anyway, sounds like you need some diehard Louisville fans to add to the discussion there. Good thing is that if you can afford it, you know where to advertise - directly on the Louisville athletics page.
Well that's the rub. I can't advertise anywhere that does Louisville content besides the Courier-Journal. Rivals and Scout won't let me for obvious reasons. But I'll deal with that soon enough. As for what you can write about is Conference Realignment issues if you've been following it. I can come up with the topics if necessary. I shoot for 1000 word articles and try to put one out ever few days or more.
I don't have a problem with cross posting book reviews. I can even generate some content for WoH. I have had a couple people do guest posts on my site. Notch for one wrote a really good civil war piece. I would like to see him write some more but I know he also maintains his own site. I am always open to someone else writing content and of course they would get full attribution. The only caveat I have is that any content has to relate somehow to military history, I do not want the site to start going off on a tangent. Heck, I sometimes think I already put too much commentary on current wars up. I think I am going to start highlighting some of the relevant threads from WCF in asides on the blog. I also think I am going to cancel my Adsense account and get rid of the Google ads altogether. I don’t generate any meaningful revenue from them and I think they just look tacky. I think the only revenue generator I will keep up are Amazon affiliate ads, at least I make some money off of those and they are not so obnoxious. I find that the ads Google pops up are rarely relevant and sometimes downright inappropriate. I also don’t like the fact that Google does not give me complete control over what type of ads get displayed. So yeah, If anyone wants to write anything for inclusion let me know or even just write it and put it up. Donnie, Ken, Notch, and Phid already all have accounts with editor privileges so you can guys can put something up anytime. I would also encourage Vulture6 and Donroc to contribute if they want. I have been considering asking them both if they any ideas. Vulture6 brings a great take on Operations and Strategy and I am certain that Donroc can provide some very interesting pieces on Spain’s imperial progress in the 16th and 17th centuries. Both are areas I tend to neglect, being much more of a campaign, drums and bugles, type historian.
All good ideas… acting together can only help everyone involved. The problems with my main site is that it is very niche... strictly Missouri and Kansas in the Civil War... Very specific traffic... not sure it would help the readership at other sites. It might. Maybe if for nothing else than visibility...I also have started a new site called "Historical Christian" and have a pastor friend of mine who teaches, get this, Greek, and is about done with is doctorate in theology. We both love history as well as the historical aspects of Christianity... so that site might tie in with some of the others here...There needs to be a post here with URLs, descriptions, etc so that they can be added to everyone's site.

Oh I would love to have your pastor friend take over Tribulation Project if he were willing to.

I don't think he has enough hours in the day to commit to anything else. He only gives me an article now and then because he is so busy.... Very smart guy....
Christian Legacies, Donnie's religious themed forum
I think that is all. Let me know if I missed any.On a related thought, does anybody know if they still do webrings? I don't remember seeing one for at least 2-3 years. I have registered m blog with all of the blog aggregators I can find and one or two even drive traffic my way but not enough to make a huge difference. Most of the traffic I get is direct traffic or search referrals.
Notch's blog also needs to be added. I think the traditional webring has been more or less replaced by alternative means of linking, whether by blogrolls or pages dedicated to links. I remember when webrings were popular in the late 90s (I actually created one for another site I made) but they eventually decreased in popularity.
Sorry, I stupidly forgot that Notch maintains his two blogs. Even dumber when you consider I have them bookmarked. I am going to add both of them to my blogroll right now. They should be up in about ten minutes.
