I don;t know how closely you follow the Syrian VCivil War but there are several crusader sites that have been used in the war.  The most famous is Krak des Chevaliers built by the Knights Hospitaller,  which sits west of rebel held Homs and was occupied by rebel forces in 2011.  It has recently been in the news again because the Syrian army retook the castle a few days ago after bombarding it with artillery and airstrikes before assaulting it with infantry.  It is apparently still in pretty good shape although the chapel supposedly got torched.  [img]http://www.scmp.com/sites/default/files/styles/486x302/public/2014/03/22/4c822f10cc5219da06ef25b6c6ddd7c9.jpg?itok=7gaXgVMt[/img]The Syrian army claims they tried to minimize damage when retaking the castle as it is listed as a UNESCO world heritage site.  I tend to believe them as Krak was a big money maker for the region before the war and will no doubt be so again with another chapter written in it's 1,000 year history.The story is here and a one from the BBC with a lot more pictures
