How do you think Hannibal rated among the great generals of the past? Did he just catch Rome at a bad time or was he really that good?

He was really that good.  He held Rome down for nearly 17 years.  His military acumen is still considered the best of all time historically next to Napoleon and Alexander the Great.  I'd say he was the most brilliant tactician the world has ever known.
