I'd like to start a thread to discuss tips on formulating answers to essay questions on an exam. The tip I will offer here will not work for every essay or every situation, but it is a powerful and easy-to-remember tool which will help with completeness of an answer. It can be used in situations where analysis is desired, rather than situations which are looking primarily for answers comprised of specific facts.This is the IRAC rule:I = Issue: identify the issue that must be discussed so as to create the proper framework for your answerR = Rule: identify the rule that applies in a particular situationA = Application: apply the rule you've identified to the specific situationC = Conclusion: based on your application, come to a conclusion of applying the rule to the issueExample - say I had to answer an exam question which asked:(more to come later)
I feel like I'm waiting for the next episode of 24. ;DIs the "Issue" part also considered the introduction?For the conclusion, is it OK, and perhaps even neccessary, to repeat points made in earlier paragraphs?
