Our founding fathers gave us the 1st amendment to ensure that there would be no state churches enforced upon the people. I guess they could not imagine other religions taking root in this christian country. 🙁 sigh
Rather I think that they thought (and promoted by the 1st Amend.) freedom of (and from) religion would trump any intolerance that might brew otherwise. They came from a rather intolerant background and saw the results.
