There was a little blurb about the bad maneuver by the House to condemn the killing of over one million Armenians by Turkey in the First World War:
Supporters of the Armenian resolution took such risks for what is little more than a symbolic statement on something that happened 92 years ago. Then, 1.5 million Armenians died near the end of World War I. Armenians say genocide. Turkey says the deaths resulted from the war. Either way, the House resolution changes nothing in the historical debate except to establish an official House version of events under intense pressure from Armenian-Americans.
Politicians Judging HistorySo do people here agree or disagree? Was this a needless political act which only really hurts relations today? Or was it important as a matter of justice to bring this up?
Bad timing on the part of the House leadership. IMO, the genocide happened, it should be and has been acknowledged by most, but we need Turkey strategically, and our relations to the Arab world are improving, it's still very touchy. (isn' that what Democrats have been saying since 9-11? Yet they do this? 🙂Here's a short (well...not 80 pages long) commentary from CSIS.

Doesn't have to be labeled; neither did the systematic treatment of AmerInds during the 18th and 19th century, eh? Reminds me of Bill Clinton apologizing for slavery... a grandstand play, nothing more.
I haven't studied the subject so I don't really know the answer to whether it did in fact occur. I do realize this is a different issue than whether Congress should have made a statement on it.I did see this just today which is a response to allegations of genocide by a Turkish official in Britain.'There was no Armenian genocide'The last paragraph of it was interesting:
