Today is the 25th anniversary of the Challenger explosion. I think this is one of those moments where everybody who was above a certain age remembers where they were when they heard about it. I was a freshman in High School and we were watching the launch live on TV in English class. Being a huge space and NASA fan I will never forget the way the class went silent when the Shuttle exploded live on TV. I think it is one of the few times in my life that I have ever heard a TV announcer go silent.
I remember that day as well. Although I didn't witness it live, I couldn't help thinking about Ms McAuliffe, the first teacher in space, and all the schoolchildren who were viewing the launch live.
I remember it vividly. I was in the US Army stationed at Camp Red Cloud in South Korea. I was hanging out at the NCO club getting ready to have some lunch and was sitting in there watching the launch and then when it exploded I remember clearly thinking “that was NOT supposed to happen… this is not good”.Obviously we know the rest... it was pretty horrific and the knowledge that a civilian was on the flight made it even more surreal.
Does that mean I can tell old people jokes now? ;D
What's that ye say sonny? ???I might already have two artificial hips but I don't even qualify for an AARP card (yet) - I guess it's the miles, not the years ;D
