Never wanted to go that way, you know, where everyone stands around saying things like: That just never happens..a million to one shot…it will probably never happen again. But than again, maybe they will erect a sign in memorium.
You have to think that King William was standing partially in the line of fire of Sir Walter. I don't know how far off an arrow would be deflected by hitting a tree…at high speed it would penetrate the tree if it's shot head on, and so the alternative would be that it just glanced off the tree. In this case, the glance wouldn't make it go backwards.
Like the story of Julian the Apostate who was killed in battle? They didn't know who threw the spear – the enemy (the Persians?) or the Romans. However, I have absolutely no knowledge about anything like going on with King William.
Arrows deflect quite easily if they are not direct hits on wood. Just ask the stock tank my dog uses for a pool, it has several silcone patchs in it filling holes from my sons arrows. Luckily that dog was never in it when it got hit.

That's why I think it had to have hit off a tree at an angle. But would it have made more than a 90 degree change in direction? If not, it means the king would probably have been standing in an unwise location compared to the shooter to begin with. Also, could your son have been using the pool for a backdrop for his target practice?
No, he couldnt have, I was with him.It is quite concievable that the hunting party was either on-line or strung out along a trail and thus the King was forward of the shooter. It only requires one person(either king or shooter) to be stupid for an accident like this to happen.
