Visby is very famous as being the site of a medieval battle that has left us with much knowledge about medieval weapons and typical battle wounds of the time. Many of the dead from the battle were thrown into a nearby bog and almost perfectly preserved until they were excavated in the 70's and 80's. John Keegan has a picture of the head of one of the recovered bodies on the cover of a later edition of The Face of Battle.
One wonders why they don't just bury the bones.
