ParticipantSaw an interesting article in the German Magazine Der Spiegel the other day. Unfortunately you cannot acces the article online without paying for it. The premise of the article is that the Afghan War is a quagmire and they use history to prove why the west cannot win. They title the article is “Friedhof der Supermaechte”, which means “Graveyard of Superpowers”. They recount how Afghanistan has never been successfully conquered going back to Alexander the Great. They actually make a decent case. I just thought the article was interesting in how they tried to use history to illustrate the futility of fighting in Afghanistan.I dont necessarily agree with their premise but it is neat, to say the least. They also have a slideshow of what the Bundeswehr is doing there including a picture of the infamous, in Germany, airstrike site. Participant“The main thing we learn from history is that we don't learn much from history” Interesting article from a former counter-insurgency officer in Vietnam : lessons learnt long ago have been forgotten.http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-19634728

ParticipantThose in the know have been saying for years that we have forgotten the past lessons of counter-insurgency in our current wars.

ModeratorI use to be a proponent of COIN. Not so much anymore, especially in Islamic nations.

ParticipantIslam is very different than communism. The old rules wouldn't apply anyway.

ModeratorIt worked in Iraq (until we left). It will never work in Afghanistan. Way too many factions..political, religious, geographic, etc.Still think taking Iran out of the picture will help things a lot.

ModeratorAn American soldier killed by a bomb in Afghanistan sent an email to his Congressman weeks earlier stating that he and his men were being placed in 'unnecessary danger'.This is unacceptable. Meanwhile, Obama is on The View. What an absolutely disgusting person he is. Anyone who votes for him is either an idiot or racist.
