ParticipantAl Jazeera America TV was launched on 20 August 2013.Real news according to some. Good news or not? Who's is going to be part of the audience? Do you believe this new tv channel will be a kind of asset among all the existing media in USA? Is There More to It?

KeymasterI recall that Al Jazeera first became popular in America around 2003 and was viewed as a propaganda piece for Al Queda or anti-American sentiments in the Middle East. I think the criticism today is that it could be a way of legitimizing the voices or perspective of Islamic terrorists who want to serve their views on a broader platform in the West.

ModeratorI remember that, but then when I read it more it wasn't that bad anti American (MSNBC, etc. where worse). They have an anti-Israel bias, but it wasn't that bad, and often it was an opposing view up for debate rather than hate speech. They also published some pro American foreign policy pieces.

ParticipantThe audience will be the swarms of unreformed Muslims the State Department has been busy settling in the American heartland for the past 20+ years.

ParticipantI wonder about the reasons to set such a media: is it to target a specific audience or does it want to really provide a different view among all existing media already on air in the US ?I might be paranoid but I don't think it's just another media.I remember when CNN was launched in Europe, ppl were quite curious to know why they came, was it just an American view or something really different than before? Well it was and for both (at least for those who could understand English) especially during the first Gulf war.Today different channels are flooding over the network and I think people just keep watching their local news network. That's why I'm still wondering why they do that ...

Personally, I think they do it for propaganda purposes, not because they think too many people are going to watch what they put on the air. Arab TV is even more boring than PBS in the States.
