During the Renaissance/Baroque periods we see professionals who were able to work as artists and architects, seemingly equally as well. Eventually, though, the professions diverged, and I am trying to figure out if there were any (notable) figures who were accomplished in both fields (sculpture/painting + architecture/urban planning) in the 19th century. Do any names come to mind?
Henry van de VeldeWalter Russell
This entry on Walter Russell doesn't list any of his works. Perhaps he was involved in those fields as an amateur only? Henry van de Velde seems to have been more accomplished, at least in architecture. Still, the entry only seems to list his architectural works, not his paintings. It does show a chair he apparently designed. If so, he would have been similar to the Finn Alvar Aalto, one of the most significant architects of the 20th century (someone who most people have nevertheless have probably never heard of) who also designed furniture. Yet it seems most of these people did their work in the 20th century, not so much the 19th century.
