ParticipantI would have to say History Professor in a tenured chair. Not only do you teach, you can also pursue your research interests and widen the field of historical knowledge.

Yes, that would be quite fun. Add to it that by the time of tenure you've got a steady income and it takes the cake. Plus if need be you've got assistants to work on grunt work.

ParticipantI once thought as you guys do, but now I'm not so sure. Sure being a History professor is great if you are a liberal at a liberal university, but try being a conservative professor at a liberal university. Not so much fun anymore is it?

Too true. I guess I've gone to pretty conservative schools for my education and I would definitely want to teach in one of those kinds of atmospheres. It wouldn't be too fun to be fighting your co-workers (or even large groups of students) on a regular basis.

ParticipantIf the dean of your school is a lib and he knows you are a conservative, your goose is cooked as far as getting tenure.

ParticipantThat is why you have to play the game until you get tenure. There are plenty of flakes in academia that everybody thought was normal until they got tenure, why shouldnt it work the other way around?

That's exactly what my professor and mentor told me (he's a conservative). However, I can't keep my big mouth shut and I know how it will go. LOL

ParticipantWhat kind of job would you love to do? For me, I would love to have the job as host of "Digging for the Truth", as seen on the History Channel. They guy goes around the world trying to solve historical mysteries, or at least to come to find evidence which supports one theory over others. He gets to go scuba diving, practice his archery skills, visit museums and historical sites (not necessarily open to the public), ride chariots - all the cool stuff that I would love to do in the context of a semi-academic quest to unearth intriguing historical puzzles. Who could ask for more?
It would be cool to get that job. If I had my druthers, I would prefer to have actually lived in the desired hysterical period. But, that's just me.
