I am actually reading a book right now that is kind of about this subject. It is by David Bell and is called The Cult of the Nation in France: Inventing Nationalism, 1680-1800 So far it is a pretty interesting read though Bell takes a somewhat post-modern view. He manages to present a difficult topic in a fairly straightforward manner. He explores the concept of nation and how that fits into nationalism.
