    Time has a photo essay of the Balkan Wars of the 90's up that is well worth looking at.  I was in Bosnia from Jan-Dec 1996.  I will never forget the trail of bones around Zvornik and the smell of the mass graves we discovered.  I have also not gotten over my despite for the Serbs.  All sides did bad things in that mess, but the Serbs were especially vicious.

    Long held grudges in artifical Yugoslavia, another blunder created the the Peace to end all peace at Versailles after WWI.. The best book on the subject I have read is Wartime by Milovan Djilas. Prescient Bismarck said in the 1880s, "Some damn foolish thing in the Balkans will start the next general European war."
