Now why, pray tell, would Brazil need a nuclear submarine?  What kinds of international threats has Brazil received?  Is this good because the U.S. now has another ally with a strong navy, or is it bad because the U.S. has a new threat in the southern hemisphere?

“We can say that with these installations we are entering the select club of countries with nuclear submarines: The United States, Russia, France, Britain and China,” said Rousseff.

    It's a prestige thing I would think.

Amazing what Olympic and Soccer World Cup money can buy these days.  Maybe they want to nuke Venezuela or Argentina.

So they need a nuclear submarine for that??  Granted, I am not up to speed on Brazil's role in geopolitics, but I was unaware that it had any major foreign enemies.  Perhaps Venezuela?

I have to agree with Aeth here. If Brazil has the means why can;t they join the club.  Tjhey are not a threat to the US and West.  If anything they are another member of the club.  It is not like they are coming out of nowhere with this.  You guys do know that Brazilian troops fought with the Allies in Italy in WWII don't you?

My original post was not a claim that Brazil was not justified in obtaining a nuclear sub, but instead a question of why, and whether it was good or bad.  I am not particularly persuaded by the argument of “why not?”, since there are some pretty good generic reasons why the proliferation of more advanced military hardware around the globe is not a good thing.

Believe it or not guys Brazil is going to be a major player in the new global economy in the coming years.  They are clearing the Amazon rain forest at an amazing pace which will greatly increase their industrial output.  Brazil is also rich in natural resources and their political situation seems to be stable.  Brazil is planning on taking on a greater role in world politics and this is good news for the United States since we cannot shoulder the burden alone anymore.
