I drove out of downtown this afternoon from work over the river but a few bridges south of the one that collapsed. My older brother works very close to the bridge that collapsed and he crosses over it every day. Fortunately he had to work late tonight. Scary stuff and I'll be praying for people affected. They are saying it didn't appear to be terrorism and I hope it's not.
Thankfully the casualties are not as high as they could have been. Still at least six dead and around thirty injured. About 50 cars are under water according to FoxNews.com.
The local tv Fox affiliate here brought on a supposed expert in bridge construction and/or maintenance and he mentioned there had been “stress fatigue” signs previously detected. Still, he was confused as to why it buckled like it did. I suppose it's amazing that our modern feats of engineering don't break down much more than they do.
It is a terrible thing, but when you consider the thousands of bridges in this country I think we have a pretty good record.
