Interesting story – some people are going to be building a medieval monastery complex in Germany over the next several decades. It's a bit unclear, but it might be modeled on the plan of St. Gall, which is a Carolingian plan (the oldest such plan we have). Sounds like they want it to be a tourist attraction when it's built.http://www.spiegel.de/international/zeitgeist/0,1518,822375,00.html
I would love to see the plan of St. Gall built (and yes, I have confirmed that the project I linked to above is for St. Gall). I think that my students like it when I teach them about the plan. At first, it seems like a confusing blueprint, but when we go through the buildings one-by-one the rational nature of the design becomes evident. About the reconstruction – I think it might be too bad that they're using medieval techniques to build it. I can understand the drive for historical accuracy, but I get the feeling that opinions are more likely to change, and funding dry up, if it is not done within a much more condensed timeframe. I guess we'll have to wait and see.
