Here is a good analysis of what Bush's probable legacy will be. Bush?s Legacy May End Up Better Than You ThinkThis reporter's analysis fits in neatly with my own assumptions. I really think that historians will be kind to Bush. I definitely think he will be ramked in importance higher than both Clinton and his Father. I would argue that Bush is one of the ten greatest Presidents the country has had. The media and left wing nutjobs have it wrong Bush has indeed been a great President. They seem to want wishy-washyness which they did not get from this adminsitration.
He will be known as the Father of the American Empire…the beginning of tyranny in America. But gosh darn it, I still like the guy and would still vote for him if he were running today (but that's because there is absolutely nobody other than Ron Paul out there I like any better). 🙂

I don't get it how you show suggest that something like an "American Empire" is a negative thing, yet in the pirate thread you talked about invading the Horn to lay down the law on African nations. How do you reconcile your positions? (oh, and Merry Christmas!)

Go back and read me again. I said we couldn't afford it and that maybe China could handle it for us. I agree with skiguy that the Horn of Africa is a very strategic region of the earth that needs to be stabilized, but not for American hegemony. An American Empire is a negative thing because it goes against what the Founders wanted. But I was talking more about the emerging police state than anything else. And Merry Christmas to you too emperor!:)
Ok, true enough, you did say we couldn't afford it. But it sounded like on principle, you would support an invasion of some type (you said you “agreed” with Ski's argument, but it may be unclear as to which points you agreed with) if money were not the issue. I think that a line between “stabilizing” a region for strategic purposes and doing it for reasons of hegemony are a bit too thin here. What is the point of any American hegemony except for stabilizing purposes?I think in the end invading any region in peacetime should be looked at in terms of "American Empire". I'm not saying that none of these would ever be justified, but that they should have to pass a high threshold. I guess I don't see the line between saying one place should potentially be stabilized by force on one hand and that an American Empire should not exist on the other. Each one could very well feed off the other.
I can't say for sure do to my personal lack of knowledge, but I imagine the answer is “no”. I do think that us being in peacetime is a separate issue from another country being being peaceful, though. What I am interested here is a justified policy position, grounded in the American Constitution and prudence, which explains what America's role should be in relation to international conflict. Then, a fairly specific, objective plan which indicates when America should intervene on foreign soil, the level of involvement, and so forth. Certainly we can't say that whenever other nations go at it, or when some human rights abuses occur, that we should launch any kind of military intervention. I'm looking for something which can be applied across the board. Also, I'm not convinced at all that America should or even can be the "world's policeman".
We've exhausted our treasure being the UN's policeman. It's time we took a break and got our affairs straightened out here at home before we go on another crusade. The world is deteriorating faster than we can patch it back up again.
