I am interested in having people write “how to” articles on the study of history or “top ten” lists as it relates to some historical topic(s). I think these are quite beneficial to readers and could help to drive more traffic to the site. For example, a “top ten” article might be “The Ten Worst Strategic Mistakes in Historical Battles” or “The Five Most Influential Colonial Leaders before the American Revolution” or whatever else (there doesn't have to be a set number of points in the list). I would hope that these lists would be more than just a set of bullet points but would explain why a particular choice was included in the list. Articles with specific steps to help study history or write a history paper are also encouraged. These are generally a bit longer and more detailed than a typical post on this forum, and could attract visitors to Stumble Upon the page or link to it from other sites and we could potentially even sticky it so it's featured more prominently. Thoughts or questions on this? Please post them here.
I will try to work something up. I will be off the net from 3 July until around the middle of August on vacation and then getting a new house set up once I arrive in Germany. I will definitely be back on the site when I get set up. this is bar none the best forum I have found so far, both for the quality of the comments and the friendliness of the regular posters.
Thanks for that, Scout. We're glad you are here and hopefully we'll get more people joining by the time you come back in August. Germany is nice this time of year, isn't it? Even nice to do a little surfing in a river in Munich, like I saw when I was there a few years ago…
I also do not have any schoolwork to do as I am taking a break during the move. I just finished a class and am waiting for my grade and my next class doesn't start until September. It will give me something to do instead of twiddling my thumbs and keep me thinking historically. How about I will write up something about tips for researching on the net. There are plenty of bogus sites out there that put out bad info or are generally unreliable. Wikipedia tops the list as being unreliable. I once made Charlemagne a black man and it stayed up for almost two weeks.
That's great. It's probably best just to post it on whichever board it's most relevant in, or in Gen. History if it's not well suited for a single time period. Or, were you thinking something different?
No, I was just curious if you had somewhere specific to post the articles you asked for. I would guess this would fit best in either General History of Historical Theory. If you like it, can you pin it to the top of the board? I would say I put about 5 hours of work into it.
It has been stickied. Good work on the list…I'm sure we'll all be responding to it to further discuss it (BTW if anyone wants to Stumbleupon on the list or any pages in this forum, you're more than welcome to do so). I've also been meaning to post a list on this forum...more like a matrix of historical study approaches. I'll get it done one of these days...
Thanks, I tried to be broad while also confining myself to historical resources available. The problem with the internet is that historical information is often found in the most unlikely places so it is hard to be specific in any case.
