So I’m watching Unsolved Mysteries like I do almost every day (I’m a geek, I admit it) and they had a special on regarding Rudolf Hess.
There are some who claim that the man who landed in Scotland and died in prison wasn't really Hess at all. Apparently, Hess had been shot and surgicially treated in WWI. When examined in prison, the attending doctor said he could find no evidence of the scars that should have been present, hence, it wasn't the real Hess.
But what happened to him? There are others who speculate that Himmler had replaced Hess with a double/doppelganger and was pulling his strings (the show interviewed people who made a lot of inferences without presenting any real evidence) in order to consolidate his power within the Third Reich. What may have happened to the real Hess is never spelled out, but there were allusions to Himmler having had him killed, etc.
To top it off, they claimed that Hess didn't really kill himself in prison but was murdered by parties unknown in order to prevent him from exposing a cabal in the wartime British govt. that favored deposing Churchill and pursuing a seperate peace with Germany.
What say ye?DonaldBakerParticipantI’m sure the truth is stanger than the fiction. But I believe we bagged the real Rudolf Hess. Conspiracy nuts are still saying Hitler was never found in his bunker and somehow got away to South America etc….What about Jim Morrison still alive in Paris somewhere or Elvis? It makes for a good story, but only for those who don’t like the outcomes of history. The Nazis did try to enlist the Irish against the British by offering them independence. It didn’t go over thank goodness. Got to give the Germans credit, they could be creative and diabolical…..it is a wonder they didn’t win despite Hitler’s madness.
kingjoeyParticipantI would wager that Hess found his way to South America with the rest of the Nazi bigwigs. A lot of Nazis disappeared in Brazil, Paraguay, and other countries.
HobilarParticipantWhat rot.? Do you not think that Hess's own family would not have been able to recognize a fake when they visited him in Spandau prison after the war. What reason would the family have to lie once the war had finished?

If they new he was free they would easily have been convinced to pretend that the fake was really Hess, therefore helping the real one too escape. But in reallity I'm sure it was him. According to the Conspiracy theorists, no one ever dies and nothing is as it seems.
leeannmarieParticipantI am a firm believer that Hess, was not the Hess that died in prison. He escaped to South America. I have very close relatives that truley believe this, and they are from Brazil. They swear to have friends that met him after the war. Intresting? ::)

yeah most people belive that hitler also went to south america they say he escaped on an airplane to spain then got on the u-boat that was found after the war ended...but that is a interesting about hess
scout1067ParticipantAah, conspiracy theories. They are good for amusement if nothing else. I don't think any conspiracy theorist has ever heard of Occam's Razor. As far as they are concerned complexity is a sign of the truth of the tale. Reality should not intrude on the conspiracy. My dad has a friend that will tell you in all seriousness that fluoridating the water is a government plot to ensure the docility of the public. He claims this is how the Nazis controlled the Jews and that is where the US learned the technique. He would probably buy the Hess story too.

Nice. Some time ago there was a "conspiracy" theory that a grandfather of present Prime Minister is shown on a photo of SD officers from WWII (PM's grandfather was actually enlisted to Werhmaht). Nonsense but some guys for sure bought it. For me the guy on the photo was similar much more to Steve McQueen than the PM.
donrocParticipantI suppose the ideal Nazi physical type for escaping justice was Martin Bormann who had a face so ordinary he could hide in plain sight.
historyscientistParticipantAccording to the Conspiracy theorists, no one ever dies and nothing is as it seems. That is what the conspiracy theorists want you to believe.I enrolled to go to conspiracy theorists' conference once. But my credentials were lost in the post. Coincidence?
PhidippidesKeymasterIt’s kind of preposterous to think that the real Hess didn’t land in Scotland. Given Hitler’s reaction when he heard about Hess’ plan, it came as a surprise to the Fuhrer (and presumably to the others in the inner circle). Furthermore, at Nuremburg, Hess sat next to Goering. You would think that Goering would have spilled the beans.
Besides, what would be the point of sending a fake to Scotland, only to have him masquerade (basically for the rest of his life) as Rudolph Hess? I can’t really see the purpose of it.
