I think that's an exercise in futility. Even if that word were to be “rehabilitated” as they desire, the meaning will simply shift to another word. The fact that there is not a similar equivalent for males may be a double standard, but that's just the way it is. I don't see how they can really fix it.

There is a gap, due to history and time: America was first settled by people who couldn't stand Europe anymore, for religious or political reasons. I don't know if this can axplain that
