Replace Rome by Western world , America or Europe, and tell me how this story about intolerance, contempt for “others” might repeat itself !! .Some attitudes seem to show the same reactions these ancient civilisation had: Feeling of superiority, rejection of difference, scare of diversity, etc.
Then what is the proper response, to just accept revolutionary change because it is inevitable? I dont think so. The huge difference between America/Europe and the Romans that I see, is that the impetus for "diversity" is coming from within. It is not the result of external pressures but rather the result of a portion of the American/European people that see unassimilated ethnic pockets as somehow a good thing. History says otherwise as you have just so succinctly pointed out. If I were as militant as some think I would argue for forceful relocation along the Soviet model, I am not willing to advocate that yet and probably by the time I would it would be too late regardless.The Visigoths essentially foisted themselves on Rome, we invited them in with open arms in a fit of stupidity after WWII. The root of the problem lies in the primacy of ethnic factors in the geopolitics of the early 20th century. We are now paying the price for the misguided idealism of Lloyd George, Wilson, and Poincare who bought the line that nations should be based on ethnicity in 1918, although I lay most of the blame on Wilson who was a complete idiot. Apparently the American electorate hasn't figured it out yet because they voted Obama in last year and he is cut from the same idealistic cloth. The Nazis thought ethnicity determined nationality too. I repeat, diversity without assimilation is a recipe for disaster. Please point out a historical example where that is not true.I am also not going to deconstruct everything to figure out what I "really" mean. I think Derrida is an idiot for trying it and the theory itself is no better than Freud's repressed sexuality. You can take my words at face value, I said barbarians because that is what the Romans called them, not as some kind of backhanded judgment on the barbarians themselves. I am also aware that the barbarians did not consider themselves so.
I would comment that the attitudes of superiority that the early colonists had was what made America what it is. They didn't try to be diverse or assimilate with the natives, they conquered them. I think some of this diversity we're seeing now is a subtle form of attempts to conquer and/or change American or Western culture.
