…we are witnessing a train wreck in slow motion as far as our nation and world are concerned? Seems like every day worse news is coming out, and our only hope is that we get through the next few years without too much damage having been done.
I couldnt agree more. This is an example of why we are going downhill: Seeking to Save the Planet, With a Thesaurus The cynicism inherent in the constant branding, rebranding, and use of talking points in the national conversation highlights the shallowness of our society as a whole. The right is just as guilty as the left of sound bite campaigning. It is enough to sicken me that our supposed leaders dont have a high enough regard for the intelligence of the average citizen to talk to us in anything other than scripted remarks. Obama's reliance on the teleprompter is becoming legion. He is not only not in the same ballpark as the average American, he is not even playing the same sport. A reckoning is coming, I just dont know from which direction it will come.
I don't know if I'd describe it as slow motion. I never imagined Obama would do this much damage and make this many changes in such a short period. It's scary to think what else he can do in the next 2 or 3 years.I know this is wishful thinking on my part, but if the Democrats push through any carbon-related price increases, that will be the end of Democrats. When people have to pay more for energy because of these new laws the government wants, maybe then will the people come to their senses. I hope the Tea Parties were just the beginning of the silent majority no longer remaining silent.
The vast majority seem quite content to give more of their money to the government. We will be paying for the bailouts for years in addition to the acknowledged higher taxes necessary to pay for his ambitious social program. Either the electorate are idiots or they dont dont mind paying higher taxes. All a cap-and-trade scheme is in reality is an indirect tax. The republicans have this one right despite being wrong on many other issues. Cap and trade is nothing more than a scheme to make us evil environment destroyers pay for our sins.
I don't know that the majority will be content to give more money to the government in the long run. I think the current apathy is due to blind allegiance to the prez by his supporters, and the fact that as it is (as far as I know), it's uncertain who in particular will foot the bill. The rich, yes. But what about the middle class? The question I'm hearing is that it's uncertain how much money one will have to make in order to be considered among the rich. So as it is, we have a situation similar to what got us in trouble in the first place - people max out their lines of credit with the vague thought that it will have to be repaid some day. When payday finally comes, I'm sure we'll be hearing the gripes against the government fly.Oh, and I wouldn't trust certain polls that come out regarding public attitudes towards all of this. Especially by the Associated Press. During the election season last summer/fall I witnessed story after story regarding investigations of one party (particularly one VP candidate) but barely a sound regarding the other party's candidates. This seems to have continued now into the president's time in office...perhaps you have seen the fluff pieces from the AP regarding Obama's "night out with Michelle" or the hard-hitting pieces about the presidential dog. It's hard to gauge correctly, but I would like to know how much the media went in shaping the election and current attitude toward the president.

I am sure that in 50 years and a little distance historians will be tearing this one up. That is, if the United States still exists as a nation in 50 years. Right now, I am not so sure that it will. I trust the media about as much as I trust the government to spend my money well, which is not at all. Here is a good one from Ronald Reagan:
Question: What are the ten scariest words in the English language?Answer: I am from the government, and I'm here to help.
We may never get another Reagan, but I would settle for an Eisenhower right now or better yet, an Adams or Jackson.
There is no way it will happen but we need term limits on members of congress. They won't ever vote themselves out of a job though. I probably won't be around to see what damage Obama can do but expect it to be a disaster
You are absolutely correct on term limits, they will never happen. I am reminded of the joke about what do you call 100,000 lawyers at the bottom of the sea? A good start. You could substitute politician for lawyer and it is equally apt. The political class in America are parasites on the body of the nation and we need to figure out some way to excise them before the entire nation dies. Politicians dont exist to serve the people they are there to advance their own petty agenda and fool the people into thinking it is for them.
