This is only tangentially historical, but it seems that a mystery someone has been dropping by Edgar Allan Poe's grave on the anniversary of his death for some time. Read this:Undeterred by controversy, a mysterious visitor paid his annual tribute at the grave of Edgar Allan Poe early Saturday, placing three red roses and a half-filled bottle of cognac before stealing away into the darkness.ADVERTISEMENTNearly 150 people had gathered outside the cemetery of Westminster Presbyterian Church, but the man known as the "Poe toaster" was, as usual, able to avoid being spotted by the crowd, said Jeff Jerome, curator of the Poe House and Museum.Mystery man's annual visit to Poe graveThe article, though, is somewhat confusing. Is this person a mystery to everyone or just to those gathered outside the cemetery? Do the people who gather inside know the person's identity?
I'd say Poe has a cult following and it might be more than one person doing it. It could be an initiation to the group or one devotee who gets a thrill out of the secrecy. It is interesting though.
