I finally got my Blog up and running at http://www.military-history.us, if nothing else this will help me when I launch my commercial site next year. Just setting up a blog has given me much, much more respect for guys like Phid and Donnie who run forums. I never realized how much html coding I would have to learn to get the site running like I want it to. It is actually pretty fun to learn coding though, it is cool to make changes and see what they look like on screen.
Looking good Patrick. I'll update my blog roll to include your new site. Yes coding is almost addictive. Just remember, after you've had fun changing things around, you will end up going to what works and that is keeping it simple and functional. Your content is what will bring visitors, not how pretty you can make it look. Just stick with readable fonts Ariel, Sans-Serif etc… and you can do no wrong. Your audience will love you for it trust me.
I have stuck with twenty-ten for the theme because of its simple clean look. I hope that my content eventually draws visitors but if it does not I am not too worried about it. I am thinking of the blog as more a place to park my own thoughts and rambles and if others find them interesting then great, if not, that is OK too. It only costs something like $9.99 a month to keep it up and running so I am OK if I am the only one looking at it.
That WordPress theme is excellent to work with… I agree with you that the simple, clean look is the way to go, especially when related to blogs… too many get weighed down in fluff and it dteres from the actual writing content.I look forward to reading what you post there...
That?s an interesting piece on technology and warfare. After reading it I start to consider that if wars were originally fought on land, then land and sea, air, space and now cyberspace. Where will the future battlefield be?One thing we need to remember about technology is that, although the side with superior technology doesn?t always win the war, the side with technology that enables them to dominate the newest battlefield always wins the major battles.
Thanks, feel free to comment on my page as well. I like comments, it makes me feel like someone actually looked at my site versus what Google Analytics tells me.
I kind of like that at WCF you jump right in to the forum. I think a front end kind of distracts from the purpose of a forum. that and a forum generates it's own content.

The front end can be used to get folks to the forum...more Google links.
I think it's high time Phid launched a WordPress front end for WCF. Red Rover Red Rover we dare Phid to come over. 🙂
Donnie, don't you remember the earliest version of the domain that had a "welcome page" at the top level domain?http://web.archive.org/web/20051224151513/http://www.westerncivforum.com/There was a big picture of George Washington on a horse, on the right of that page. Admittedly, it was no WordPress install, but it was meant to be the same general idea. I think that after a while I realized if I installed a blog on the TLD, it would basically be the same thing as posting forum messages but in a blog format - so why not simply post those things in the forum rather than in the blog? Basically, I didn't want to cannibalize the forum by creating a blog at the expense of the forum, especially in those early days when forum postings were at a premium (not that this has really changed, though 🙂 ).Anyway, I'm getting kicked in the derrier trying to get my school stuff done...I haven't even been able to switch my web sites over to the new hosting service yet like I had planned. I have also been wanting to change my Great Awakening into a WordPress site (though Drupal might work as well) and updates all my other sites as well....argh! Oh, and so much for updating WCF to SMF 2.0! Needless to say, I'm hoping for a productive Christmas break in the realm of webmastering! ;D
Then I would tie in the Great Awakening site to WCF and please stay away from Drupal. WordPress is all you need and it's so much easier to deal with. I would definitely contribute to the Great Awakening site once you got it up and running.
Yeah I generally like WordPress and have built two sites with it thus far, but I have heard really good things about Drupal and have done some testing on it in the past. For my GA site, I just need something relatively static because I don't have to keep adding pages. But I'll still probably go with WP for that anyway.Oh, and I have tried to direct some traffic to WCF from GA, and I think it has worked to a degree thus far.
