ParticipantWhat is your favorite civil war movie? I liked both the Shaara movies, Gettysburg and Gods and Generals.

KeymasterOne of my favorites was Glory, starring Matthew Broderick and Denzel Washington. Good story with good acting. FYI – there's a scene where you can see a group of slave kids waving their good byes to someone going off on a wagon. If you look closely, you can see a curious-looking digital wristwatch on one of the kids. Kind of funny.Another interesting one was Cold Mountain. Overall the movie was alright, but it had some interesting aspects to it, such as the perspective of the Southerners who were really reved up for a war against the North. Also, it showed how once the town essentially became deserted when all the males left for war, the town became a kind of place where vigilanteism sprouted.

Good chioce. That was an excellent movie. Very sad ending though. The only thing I liked about Cold Mountain was the scene involving the battle of the crater, I'm not sure I'd seen that on film before, and I think It was done well.

KeymasterNobody's said “Gone with the Wind” yet. I remember watching it when I was very young and I obviously didn't get much out of it. I should try watching it again sometime seeing how it was perhaps named Best Picture in 1939, right?

ParticipantHonestly, with all due respect to his father, I think he is better. To the last man was brilliant.

KeymasterYou know what I realize – there really aren't that many Civil War movies out there, and there are even fewer American Revolution movies. Meanwhile, there are plenty of Vietnam and WWII movies. I think that the farther back in history we go, the less depiction there is, even though some of these prior events had more direct impact on our lives now.

ParticipantDid you see Jeff Daniels as G. Washington in the Crossing? I have only seen parts but it didnt seem bad. A&E (I think) made one about Benedict Arnold (Kelsey Grahmer played Washington) The Patriot was a good one.

ParticipantGone With The Wind is a classic that will be hard to beat. I read the book when I was ten years old. Also went to the movie in the 1940's but didn't get to see it all because the theater caught on fire and I was almost trampled by a herd of old ladies with umbrellas. I have seen it several times since them though
