Italy had some extraordinary cities during the Renaissance period. Cities were much more like their own states than they are today, as they would engage in battle with one another from time to time. They also offered their own contributions to the arts, politics, and so forth. Which city listed in the poll would you most like to visit if you could go back in time?
Uh, well I did. I don't know why exactly, but Venice has too much water, and the Florentines were well noted for their arts and politics. Sounded like a good choice to me. 🙂

Wait - you don't know why Venice had too much water? I guess "it's in the ocean" is too easy of an answer so I'll wait for your clarification. 🙂 And BTW, Venice was also noted for its politics, and its art wasn't too bad either. It also managed a good economy and had its own Adriatic empire in its day.
I don't know much about Milan's activities during the Renaissance, but Florence's history is well-documented. It is a beautiful city, though I believe it is currently dwarfed by Milan.
You know Scout, the Tower at Pisa has been secured (2002) and tourists are allowed access again. The Cathedral at Pisa is one of the finest examples of Romaneque architecture (9th century) there was nothing like it in Italy at the time, I'd go there or to Florence.http://www.bluffton.edu/~sullivanm/pisa/pisacathedral.html
Yes, I was TDY to Pisa last year and got to go into the Tower. One of our Italian employess knows a policeman who got us in for free and let us cut the line to go into the Tower. It was very cool, but I like the Churches nearby even more.
I haven't been there but I saw it on PBS's Travel Europe series. Thank goodness for PBS! Are you brave Scout? That is do you sample the local food with wild abandon? 😀

I will generally try anything but fish once. I hate fish.I even ate the food from locals in Iraq, ONCE! That was a mistake not to be repeated. montezuma has nothing on allah when it comes to revenge, I think I lived on the toilet with a bucket next to me for three or four days after that. I have to say the best/funniest/most disgusting thing I saw in Iraq food-wise were the ice cubes with flys frozen into them. They would actually use these ice cubes too.

This reminds me of an old joke:An arab, an israeli, a chinese, a scot and an american were sitting at a cafe and having drinks. When they were served they saw that each of their glasses except the arabs had a fly in it. The chinese guy drinks the coke, and then eats the fly.The scot, drinks the coke down to its last drop then complains about the fly to get another drink free. The american takes the fly out, sells it to the chinese guy sells the rest of the coke to the scot for a redused price, buys a new coke with the money and makes a little profit. There was also an arab-israeli angle but I forgot exactly how it was.
nkuler, pretty funny! ;D Scout, what is the best local food you have tried anywhere? I mean local food, not well known cuisine.Maybe the fly is best part of the drink!
