KeymasterFrederick Douglass is an interesting figure and from what I recall his autobiography is a good, easy read. So I was reading the following article which considers him in light of the new “Obama age”:Recalling Douglass in the age of ObamaI got to the last paragraph and had to re-read it. This was coming from a Harvard professor, mind you:?Similarly with Obama, there were countless times when whites, before hearing and experiencing Obama?s magic, said, ?I won?t vote for a black man,? but then they?d see his beauty, hear his eloquence, and be converted and vote for him.?So voters were "converted" based on his "beauty" and the way he talked? All form and no substance, eh? Not to mention the claim of "countless times" of white racism in considering Obama...all this, despite the lack of any evidence that this actually occurred.

ParticipantFrederick Douglas was a man of substance and character unlike the empty suit currently in the Oval Office. Comparing the two is like comparing apples to oranges, it can't be done. I am sure the truth will continue to be stretched to make it happen in this instance and in others we have yet to see.

ParticipantI read Douglass' bio and my impression is that he would be embarrassed by Obama. For all the hardship and brutality that Douglass endured, his writing is so restrained and pragmatic, he is dignity, serious and concrete. No one critisized Obama until he became president, he has always been told how brilliant he is and I think he understands black America less than I do.

ParticipantPlenty of folks criticized Obama before he got into office. They are called Conservatives and Libertarians. But you are right in that he was (and still is) surrounded by fawning yes-men, trying to convince him he is the second-coming.

ParticipantThe campaign was replete with PC. John McCain fired staff because they used Obama's middle name. Any time someone critisized him the world media blew like the North wind. As far as Obama could see, he was the second coming. Any attempts were smothered, do you remember that?

ParticipantYes, I do. I also remember that the McCain campaign were not the only folks out there talking about him. Malkin and Coulter were particularly critical of Obama during the campaign, don't forget Limbaugh either. By and large the MSM supported Obama, which tends to obscure the criticism that existed at the time.
