If anyone has seen the Gangs of New York, you'll know that the story surrounds the battle between the so-called “Native Americans” (low to middle class Americans who had been living in the country for a generation or longer) and the influx of Irish immigrants who came to America's shores in the mid-19th Century. It's an interesting story about lawlessness and competition. I'm wondering if the same attitude or perspective portrayed in that movie is similar or different from the attitude today toward immigrants, most of whom are illegal. You've got people who have been living and working in the country for a long time and new immigrants arriving all the time. What do you think?
The attitude today is diverse. You still have ethnic gangs and racsist orginizations. In five points the racial strife was a lot more politically motivated then it showed in the movie. Most riots were on or around the election periods, as was the corruption. today I think the only political uproar is the illeagal migration of mexicans from the south, It also revolves around keeping the borders safe because of the threat of terrorisim. Some similarites, some differences.
