I decided to get a second Bachelor's and chose IT because it seems like a field with good earning potential. But man do the classes suck. I just though I was a computer geek until I started taking these classes. They are starting to eat up more and more of my time to the point where I am struggling to post anything to my blog and have trouble even keeping up with WCF. I am trying though and luckily I should finish in May next year. This is going to suck until I get done though.
The classes are not boring but the sheer analytical thought involved in programmng gives me headaches. I am going to stick with it for the prospect of getting a 6 figure job though.
By the way, when I first saw the subject of this post (“Getting an IT degree is hard”), and before I saw who wrote it, I thought to myself, “here we go again, another spammer!”
I would like to go back and get a computer science degree and be able to code php, javascript, and maybe perl. I don't know what else they would force me to learn, but it would be useful because the job market is full of opportunities for computer geeks.
I hope I am not a spammer. 😀 As I increasingly realized there is almost no job market for historians outside of academia I decided to use my GI Bill and go back to school. To decide which degree to pursue I spent a few months reading the want ads and there are tons of unfilled IT jobs because of a lack of qualified people. So tada!, my new degree path. Once I get the BS I am seriously considering using the rest of my GI Bill to get an MS in Information Systems. Guys with a Masters easily command 6-figure salaries.
I already have several Nigerian friends, most of them with terribly sad stories but they need my help to get a hold of millions. I have been getting a lot from Indonesia lately too. 😀
I've been in IT for closing in on 20 years. It was exciting and fun in the 90's, but now the changes is so rapid, the need to wear more than one hat (and in most cases 5 or 6) is getting old. I am not only a system admin, but a network admin, application support, virtual environment manager and Blackberry administrator. I get no more money for all those roles and work a LOT of hours. We have a total of 3 "Tier 4" IT Specialists when we really should at least 5. For a while we had to make due with just 2 of us.I hope your future experiences turn out better, but like I said, the past 10 years this has seemed to be the norm... a lot of work, a lot of hours, little support and usually on the receiving end of "it's IT's fault."I'm a GS-11 and I still am just scraping by... Experience means more in the IT world than degrees or certifications, and I have certifications all day long and it really doesn't mean much.Again, I hope it turns out for you. Me personally I am looking forward to retirement from the government and then using my history degree to enjoy life after IT. 😀
I am hoping to get a Sys or Network admin job at a medium size company. I have absolutely no desire to work a GS job. I had my belly full of government service on AD. I see IT as a means to an end. My first love is and always will be history.
